My Installation

 Toilet Paper

For my final installation, I have placed 181 pieces of paper in bathrooms across campus. My girlfriend went into the women's bathrooms to hang up the posters in there, THANK YOU!!! The goal that I had in mind at the very beginning of this class was to create a piece of art that the viewers would interact with in a unique way. Or at least I wanted to present my art in a way that I had never considered before. So naturally, this led me to the bathroom.

This is a private space. Its users don't want to stay too long. However, it is a space that everyone must interact with on a daily basis. So to force the viewer to look at my installation, I taped posters directly in front of toilets.

Human nature has made it inevitable to participate in this installation. But the privacy of this nature and this location has created a disconnection. I cannot know what others think of my work. I cannot ask members of the audience what their thoughts are. I can't even look at their reactions, if they are smiling, disgusted, laughing, confused, if they look away, maybe people will even take it down. I won't know.

Part of my installation is this unknown. From the very beginning, my plan was to put these posters up and then never touch them again. My hope is that the installation can now run itself. As more time passes, more people will interact, and maybe the same people will partake multiple times.

I have placed my poster throughout 11 different locations (Wriston, Briggs, Stietz/Youngchild, Ormbsy, Hurvis, Warch, the Mudd Library, Plantz, Sage, the con, and Art House). On top of that, I created 11 different poster designs. With all these locations and different posters, I hope that people will be able to interact with various posters in different locations, allowing them to have a unique experience every time they visit the bathroom.

    Here are my posters.

And 1 blank sheet of paper was placed in the women's bathroom on the second floor of Warch.

There wasn't really a goal with the designs. I wanted them to be funny, and for some reason, I was obsessed with "live laugh love". I didn't realize this until I printed out and hung up 70 sheets of paper with that saying.

But I do think that one goal was to make the viewers slightly uncomfortable. especially with the security camera, the "I see you", and the QR code that directs people to my phone number. So far, 21 people have scanned it, but no one called :(

Overall, it was a very uncomfortable experience for me. I spent the last two nights going into over 100 bathroom stalls. Sadly, I didn't put up a poster in EVERY bathroom on campus, maybe after experiencing my poster, its viewers will find a new appreciation for their non-postered bathrooms.

That being said, some Lawrentians have already decided to decorate the bathrooms for me!
