Spaces

 Places In Passing

The criteria for all of my spaces are locations that you wouldn't normally hang out in. I wanted them all to be places that you are in momentarily, maybe on the way to your final destination. Or places you see, but usually wouldn't interact with or think about. If someone did put up their art in these places, I wonder if people would actually stop, or if they would look over and then continue on their way.

Elevator

My first location is an elevator. I think they are extremely underutilized. It's the perfect space to display your art, because once someone enters, there is nothing else for them to do but look at your art! But elevators are kind of weird. It's just a box that moves you up and down. Its purpose is to take you to your destination. You're not meant to stay for a long time, so it definitely would create an impractical way to view art. I also just think that they are fun to ride in.

Stairs

Similarly, my second space is a staircase. I think this is an even more inconvenient place to display art. With an elevator, you are at least stationary while you're moving (if that makes sense). With stairs, however, you are actively moving. It wouldn't make sense for someone to stop and question why there is something framed on the way.

Behind the Stairs

My third location is behind the stairs leading up to Chapman Hall. There is no reason why anyone would ever need to go back here. I don't even know why this space exists. So obviously it fits perfectly for my theme. Maybe a piece of art would give it a purpose. Or maybe no one would even notice.

Wall by Stairs

In the same vicinity, my fourth location is the wall by the stairs leading to Chapman Hall. This is a space where most students quickly rush past on their way to class. But if there were an installation here, would they stop and look after class?

Subway

My fifth space is Subway. Specifically, the sub making waiting line. This is a very drastic change from my other spaces, but I think it fits perfectly with my theme. You are only supposed to stay here for as long as it takes to make a sandwich. Maybe Jimmy John's would have been a better location, considering they are 'freaky fast', but my girlfriend wanted to eat at Subway.

Bathroom Stall Window

My sixth space is a bathroom stall window, or the wall in front of the toilet. If there were an art piece here, the viewer would be forced to interact with it. But it's not necessarily a space where you would want to stay and look.

Inside the Freezer

My seventh space is inside a freezer. A fridge is a space where a lot of art (and other documents/papers) are hung up. So I thought the most inconvenienced space for a piece of art to be displayed would be inside the fridge, specifically the freezer. For this space to work, there needs to be something inside the freezer, because this means the viewer could only look so long before having to close the fridge again.

Walmart Aisle

My eighth location is an aisle in Walmart. I feel like generally I don't like to spend a lot of time in grocery stores. Stopping in the middle of the aisle to look at the food options while there are ten other people with shopping carts trying to move around you is already the most inconvenient space. So why not give the consumer another reason to hold up everyone else's shopping?

Dumpster

My ninth space is a dumpster. Nobody stops here. But people do have to take out the trash. So if there was an installation here, would those people be inclined to stick around a little longer? Also, a lot of the early happening installations used trash, so I thought it would be ironic to bring the installation to the trash (I'm guessing something like this has already been done before though haha)

Space in the Wall

My tenth and final space is this random gap in the wall in the art house. I have no idea what the original purpose of this was for, and I don't really even have any guesses. But it's in the middle of the hall, right between the bathroom and the janitor's closet. This is actually one of the more convenient spaces I photographed, but the randomness of it, to me, makes it seem like it should be included in my spaces. Although it looks like someone already beat me to it, as this purple piece of art has been on display all year long. BUT I haven't seen anyone stop and look at it, so I guess that answers my question. People would just go on their way.
